HTML, CSS, Wordpress

Learning to code in HTML and CSS is essential to my approach as a UX designer. Understanding information architecture, layout systems like the box model, and the full lifecycle of a website (from securing a domain to publishing and optimizing it for search) allows me to design experiences that are not only thoughtful, but realistically buildable.

This project served as the capstone for my coding course. I partnered with a small business and proposed, designed, and fully coded their website.

Simeone Consultancy is an LLC formed by Desiree and Jonathan Simeone and is based in Oregon. They offer coaching, workshops, seminars, and testing based on digital accessibility, specifically for visually impaired. They are both visually impaired, and could use a stylized website to help them grow their audience, strengthen their message, and advance their mission.

Their original website looked like this:

I had never worked with a blind client before, and since my own workflow is very visual, I had to adjust how I approached things. Wording and how it was interpreted by a screen reader immediately mattered a lot more. Images weren’t a priority for the client, but they were open to them as long as everything stayed accessible.

To make sure the design made sense, I sketched each page for myself, then rewrote the exact layout in plain text, matching the structure. That helped when working with the client and making sure everything came across correctly for my clients who are blind, and their clients who are also most likely visually impaired.

It was relatively straightforward, I approached it like a redesign: auditing the original website and corresponding with the client to understand exactly what they need and want from the website. When it came to visuals, they gave me free reign!

I learned so much about speaking in HTML, not only for writing code but also when it comes to using Figma for developers: naming components, blocking out sections of a website, etc.!

I also now know how to secure a domain, and how to download and design a website in Wordpress.
